Discussing the "Basics"

We've proposed using the building on the west side of the property, measuring 48ft long by 15 ft wide, for boarding the dog guests. The building currently houses farm equipment. With the addition of a south facing wall and the extension of both water and electricity lines it can be a relatively "easy" transformation. After extensive research, I'm considering installing 5x5 indoorkennels leading through guillotine doors to 5x10 outdoor kennels.

The outdoor kennels will lead into a large corral that will be transformed into the doggie play area. Most of the play area will remain dirt (very exciting for our digging guests) while I plan to add some type of ground cover to the individual outdoor kenneled areas - grass, wood mulch, turf (any advice or feedback on this w
ould be greatly appreciated.) I will add a pool for hot days and other play/exercise equipment to keep the dogs stimulated. The design of the play area is very important to me as I plan to have the dogs out of their kennels as much as possible.

In the beginning...

Ever since I was a kid I knew that I wanted to work with animals when I grew up. I started boarding animals (any animal I could find) in my parents house: hamsters, doves, chickens, goats, cats, dogs... While my parents probably didn't support me sitting on our couch watching TV with my pet chick, Mr. Peepers, they always supported my love and desire to shelter animals. So much support, that 20 yearslater they have offered to allow me to open my own boarding kennel on their property. Their 80 acres and multi building premises allows for an ideal setting for The Black Dog Ranch, Premier Dog and Cat Boarding Kennel.

This project is going to be the most difficu
lt thing I've ever done, but I have never been so excited about a challenge. We are going to have to renovate buildings, purchase and install the dog runs and cat condos, and prepare safe and fun play areas.

Follow the progress as unused barns and open space transforms into my dream of a beautiful, safe and comfortable pet boarding facility.
